Freddie Sheffield has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type II. SMA is a genetically inherited neuromuscular condition resulting in decreased muscle strength throughout the body. This means that Freddie has a maximum of 10% of normal muscle strength and is a permanent wheelchair user.
He has been at The Beacon for nearly 10 years and has recently undergone major surgery for scoliosis (curvature of the spine). He leads as normal a life at school as is possible but with obvious restrictions – he cannot play sport, take his jumper off, serve himself lunch or even pick up a pencil without the aid of an assistant or friend.
Freddie is involved this year in helping raising a total of £2,000,000 as part of the charity’s Momentum Adventure campaign.
We hope that many Beacon boys will be raising funds for the campaign by taking part in their own challenge on 7th July. We are also organising a Gala evening on 2nd July when talented old boys, staff and parents will be performing.
With your help we are confident that we will be able to raise significant funds as well as awareness of SMA.
